catalase

Catalase, an enzyme that catalyzes the reaction by which hydrogen peroxide is decomposed to water and oxygen. Found extensively in organisms that live in the presence of oxygen, catalase prevents the accumulation of and protects cellular organelles and tissues from damage by peroxide, which is continuously produced by numerous metabolic reactions. Commercial catalases are used to break down hydrogen peroxide in wastewater[1].

Usage and Biology

We learned that ROS are converted to H2O2 by Superoxide dismutase (SOD), and then catalase catalyses the decomposition to H2O and O2 . We then established a sucrose-sensing switch in Vibrio natriegens, pSacB , which can be activated in the presence of sucrose to express the downstream SOD and catalase to catabolise ROS. This will help to improve host resilience.
